Renowned Czech virtuoso, violin collector, who made violin popular and one of the most important contemporary Czech violinists. All of this is encompassed in the name of Jaroslav Svěcený.
After graduating from the Prague Conservatory and the Academy of Performing Arts Sveceny completed his training courses with world virtuosos Nathan Milstein and Gidon Kremer. During his working on the music scene, he has received numerous awards, including the prestigious prize for creative artistic activity from Masaryk Academy of Arts and the Gold Plaque President.
Jaroslav Svěcený is not only a great virtuoso, but also a recognized expert on the history and construction of violins. In 2008 he was named a forensic expert in the field of stringed musical instruments.
There is still much doubt and speculation surrounding the true origins of the violin. It can be said however, that the violin in its present form, is the result of a long process of evolution of stringed instruments that preceded it. The first modern violin was apparently built in the first half of the 16th century in northern Italy.
This instrument gained rapid popularity across all social classes and subsequently spread throughout Europe. The oldest Andrea Amati violin was made in Cremona in the year 1564.
The greatest amount of popularity this instrument gained was in Italy, where the most famous violin in the world was born. The most famous of all violin makers is undoubtedly the genius Stradivari, who also comes from Cremona.
But other European countries are not left out since they are also home to world-renowned violin- making families.
The first violin makers and luthiers in Bohemia occurred up until the Renaissance period and mainly in Prague. During the Thirty Years War, the country was greatly devastated and there was an overall decline in manufacture, which had a very negative impact on all crafts of that time.
A basic understanding of music, which is now called “classic”, occurred in Bohemia in the Baroque period. The influence of music and musical instruments was on the rise at that time for the rich nobility and the high clergy.
They started to build the first chamber instruments for chateau salons which are subtle and produce a mellow sound. Violins of this type have high arched front and back panels and were built by the famous Tyrolean violin maker Jacob Stainer in the 17th century.
